Formal Opening and Inauguration Conference

High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N)

March 13-14, 1997

Umeå University

Background
HPC2N is a consortium formed by Luleå University of Technology, Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall, Härnösand and Östersund, Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Umeå and Umeå University. This collaboration and coordination among universities and research institutes form a strong focal point for high performance computing (HPC) in Northern Sweden. One primary objective of the center is to raise the national level of competence in high performance computing and to transfer knowledge and technology in HPC to new users in academia and industry. HPC2N is one of three national HPC centers funded by the Swedish Council for High Performance Computing (HPDR).

HPC2N has recently acquired a 66-node IBM RS/6000 Scalable POWERparallel computer system. With a peak capacity in excess of 30 GFLOPS (30 billion FLoating point OPerations per Second), it is presently the most powerful IBM installation in Europe. The system is financed by a 15 MSEK donation from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. For more information about the computer system and HPC2N see http://www.hpc2n.umu.se

Invitation
HPC2N and its parties cordially invite you to the formal opening of the center, as a national center for Scientific and Parallel Computing, and to the inauguration of the computer system. The theme of the conference is "High-performance computing applications in new and traditional areas today and in the future".

With this broad-based application oriented theme, the conference is expected to attract both executives and researchers who are involved in development of high-performance computing applications in academia as well as in industry. Furthermore, this forum will provide an opportunity to strengthen ties between HPC centers, academia and industry within the Nordic countires. One of the goals of the conference is to establish a competence network in the HPC field. The official language of the conference is English.

Dates and Location
The conference will take place March 13-14, 1997 at the Umeå University campus in MIT-huset, lecture hall MA 121, ground floor. The conference starts at 10.00 on March 13 (registration desk will be open from 9.00) and ends 15.30 on March 14.
